“Funny People” Trailer
I somehow missed this when it came out back in February… Judd Apatow’s (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) new movie, entitled Funny People, is due out on July 31st, and the first trailer is making the rounds on the Internet. The movie stars Seth Rogen (shocking, I know), Jonah Hill (another shock), Leslie Mann (Apatow’s wife), Maude and Iris Apatow (Apatow’s daughters), Jason Schwartzman, and Adam Sandler.
I’m a fan of pretty much everything Apatow has been connected to (especially Freaks and Geeks), though I have to admit that I’m starting to get a tad tired of the basic formula used by most of the movies he’s involved with: 20/30/40-something guys who are teenagers at heart + the beautiful women who love them + life lessons = guys grow up enough to love their women back but enough not to stop making dick and fart jokes.
Based on this trailer, I’m not sure that Apatow is really breaking the mold all that much this time out, though it does certainly seem to have a slightly darker tone while still being pretty funny (the Die Hard reference is pretty great). And, yeah, it’s pretty clear that Sandler’s character dies anyway.
