COMPLETED: The 100 Bands In March Challenge

Killing some time in the Continental airport lounge before flying home and enjoying my first real WiFi access in days. Since I’m still pretty psyched that I hit band 100 last night (in fact, band 103), I figured I’d quickly go over the bands I’ve seen this month (so far).

And, yeah, I think I’m going for 110 now, as I drunkenly mentioned on Twitter a couple days ago.

I’ll have one or more in-depth posts about the 100 band challenge, and SXSW, in the coming days. For now, here’s a list of the bands that added up to 103. The number in [brackets] is the running total for the month.

SXSW Shows
[37] March 18: Fol Chen, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Vivian Girls, Beach House, The Bronx, Motel Motel, Cut Off Yr Hands, HR Band, Circle Jerks, Valiant Thorr, Those Darlins, Phosphorescent

[55] March 19: Efterklang, Alela Diane, Camera Obscura, LoveLikeFire, Megafaun, Henry Clay People, The Grates, Von Bondies, Girls, Rural Alberta Advantage, Grizzly Bear, Thao Nguyen, Heavenly States, Let’s Wrestle, Vetiver, Tiny Vipers, Lucero, Deep Vibration

[77] March 20: The Wrens, Rural Alberta Advantage, Bishop Allen, Motel Motel, The Anters, Woods, School of Seven Bells, Wavves, Pete and the Pirates, Temper Trap, The Drones, Lucero, Fanfario, We Were Promised Jetpacks, I Am David Sparkle, Manhattan Love Suicides, The Drones, Graham Coxon, Princeton, Wheat, John Wesley Harding and Eugene Mirman, Future Clouds and Radar

[103] March 21: Broken Gold, Medications, Lights On (I think), Takka Takka, Roadside Graves, Vivian Girls (early), Tom Brosseau, Deep Vibration, Thao Nguyen, Japanther, Vivian Girls (late), Trash Talk, The Thermals, The Bronx, Peel, Secret Life of Sofia, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, The Little Ones, Tinted Windows, Voxtrot, Trail of the Dead, The Handsome Family, We Have Band, Gentleman Jesse and His Men, Justin Townes Earle, The Waco Brothers

All of the bands listed here fit the criteria that I set out a few weeks ago – i.e., I had to see 1 song (or about 5 minutes) of each set. In most cases I saw at least 20 minutes of each set, and in many cases I saw entire sets.

There were a few (6) that met that bare minimum 1 song test (Medications, We Have Band, Gentleman Jesse, Pete and the Pirates, Broken Gold, Future Clouds and Radar), but they do still count under the rules. And, besides, even if you take them out, I still have anywhere from 5 to 15 bands coming up back in DC this next week.

So, at the end of the day… mission accomplished.
