The Airborne Toxic Event @ Black Cat [3/12/09]
Dear lord are my ears tired. Seven shows this month so far, and 17 bands. And a lot, lot more to go. I’ve actually got shows the next three nights too, but then two nights off before SXSW. Those nights off will be very nice.
That said, tonight’s show was really enjoyable. The Henry Clay People started things off with a fantastic, fun set of quality rock and roll. If you’re a fan of loud, Replacements-y, shambolic rock, you gotta check out their fantastic debut LP, For Cheap or For Free. I really, really wish I lived somewhere close enough to these guys to see them again soon. Good thing they’ll be at SXSW.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite as much of a fan of the second band, Alberta Cross. They seem to be going for a general My Morning Jacket slash Band of Horses vibe, and while they’re a talented, tight band, their songs just didn’t do a whole lot for me.
Things picked back up with The Airborne Toxic Event, though. I have no idea how these guys have gotten so big, but if tonight’s performance was any indication, they’re just gonna keep getting bigger. Just a really great set.
