Hey Rosetta! Set US Tour (Finally!) w/ Hot Hot Heat

If you’ve read this blog at all before, you’ll know that one of my biggest musical obsessions over the past couple of years has been Canada’s Hey Rosetta!.

The band was recommended to me by Chris of The Battering Room back in early 2008, about the time that their second album, Into Your Lungs, was released. Chris knew I was a huge fan of The Frames, and thought that Hey Rosetta! might be up my alley. He was right. Very, very right.

For two years I listened to Into Your Lungs (as well as the band’s first LP, Plan Your Escape) and patiently waited for a chance to see them in a live setting. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to do much touring, and their only jaunts into the US were once or twice yearly shows in New York. I considered trips to NYC to catch them, but something always seemed to come up at the last minute to stop me. I finally got a chance to see the band (twice!) at South By Southwest this year, and it was everything I’d hoped it would be. In fact, I named their sets as my #1 highlight of SXSW.

And now the band has finally announced a proper U.S. tour in support of fellow Canadians Hot Hot Heat, including a Chicago stop at Lincoln Hall on September 10th (tix on sale today at noon). I seriously cannot recommend strongly enough that you catch this show, regardless of whether you like Hot Hot Heat or not (and I really don’t at this point).

If you haven’t heard Hey Rosetta! before, check out the videos after the tour dates. Both songs are from Into Your Lungs, which, for god’s sake, you need to buy. NOW.

FAA Presents: Kelli Scarr + The Shivers (July 10)

Awesome show coming up in Fredericksburg next weekend. If you haven’t heard Kelli Scarr or The Shivers yet, you should remedy that ASAP (links below).

There’s no DC or Baltimore show, so if you’re in the area, you really need to get your ass down to F’burg for this show. And if you need any more motivation, Eyeclopes Studios is just 4 miles away from a Waffle House. Come for the music, stay for the scattering and smothering.

Assorted Recent Concert Photos

I’ve somehow managed to avoid posting photos from several shows over the last few weeks. So while I’m laid up on the couch dealing with a particularly nasty summertime sinus infection, I figured it’s as good a time as any to finally post them.

One thing this endeavor has shown me is that I need to stop using iPhoto’s new “Shadows” editing function.

Superchunk @ Taste of Randolph [6/20/10]

I’m way behind on posting photos from the past couple of weeks. Sorry about that. Here are a few pics from last Sunday’s Superchunk set at Taste of Randolph.

If you’ve never seen Superchunk before, well, you need to fix that as soon as possible. And even if you’ve seen them dozens of times like me, you need to see them again. The band may be older than dirt (as am I), but they still rock a show better than just about anyone I’ve seen. And the new tunes sound pretty awesome too.

As I mentioned on Twitter, unless they announce another Chicago show for later this year (and even if they don’t), I’m looking at flights to try to catch either a couple of New York shows or the DC show in September.

VIDEO: Sambassadeur, “I Can Try”

New video from the band’s latest album, European [BUY]. I’ve had the album for a while now but it must have gotten lost in the pre-SXSW shuffle because I honestly can’t remember much about it. I’m gonna have to remedy that.

MP3: These United States, “The Great Rivers”

These United States, “The Great Rivers”

Washington, DC’s (and Lexington, KY’s) These United States are back with What Lasts, their followup to last year’s Everything Touches Everything, and their fourth album since early 2008.

The album comes out on 7/20 via the United Interests label, and has been garnering a ton of pre-release buzz. And if this first single is any indication, I have a feeling I’m going to like this album quite a bit.

If you’re in Chicago, join me at Lincoln Hall next Monday (6/28) to catch the band opening for Thao + Mirah. They also play Lollapalooza in August, and there’s a good chance they’ll be back in town five or six more times this year. I don’t think any of them actually have homes, they’re on the road so much.

Teenage Fanclub U.S. Tour Set

Legendary Scottish rockers Teenage Fanclub today announced their first U.S. tour in five years. The tour is in support of the band’s new album, Shadows, which came out on Merge Records earlier this month.

The Fannies are one of my favorite bands of all time, and the shows I saw them play at New York’s Bowery Ballroom in July 2005 (see photo) still stand as two of the best concerts I’ve seen in my life.

The band is playing two (!) shows at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, and I will most certainly be at both. I may even have to try to catch an extra show or two out of town. (Those Superchunk shows in Seattle and Portland sure look awesome.)

This Week In Chicago [June 21-27]

Hate to say it, but June is proving to be a pretty disappointing month for music for me. This week definitely has a few more shows that I’m interested in seeing than the last couple of weeks – including a fantastic double-bill at Schubas on Friday night with Crooked Fingers early and So Cow late – but it still feels pretty underwhelming on whole. VIDEO: The Delays, “Unsung”

“Unsung” is the first single from The Delays’ new album, Star Tiger Star Ariel, which is due out in the UK next week [pre-order]. I haven’t seen info about a US release yet, and, honestly, I’m not even sure if the last album or two have gotten US releases, which is a shame.

Based on this video, it doesn’t seem like the band has strayed too far from the sound it’s perfected over the last six years. That’s not a bad thing, mind you, but there’s nothing terribly new or exciting about this tune either. Hopefully the rest of the album is a little more adventurous.
