Crustcake/1000Knives/BrooklynVegan Pizza Party

I think I may have mentioned that my plan for this SXSW is different from years past. I find that I tend to see too many bands that I’ve already seen before, and sometime even see the same band 2 or 3 times during SXSW. That’s dumb. This year I want to see as many new bands as I possibly can. And that includes metal bands.

So this party at Hoeks Death Metal Pizza (not as good as Hoboken Pizza, imo, but still solid) is definitely tempting. And, as a lawyer, so is the band name killtheclient. The only problem is the number of other great shows going on on Thursday. So we’ll have to wait and see.

BrooklynVegan / AnSo SXSW Day Party (Thurs)

Sorry the blog is becoming a bit of a de facto SXSW party blog. It’s that time of year, plus I’ve been kinda busy with work stuff this week.

BrooklynVegan & AnSo Present: A Day Party in Austin, TX!
@ Spider House (2908 Fruth St @ Guadalupe)
Thursday March 18, 2010
Noon-7pm

ALL AGES-FREE [No badges, wristbands or RSVP necessary]
19 bands on 3 stages (1 indoor and 2 outdoor)
Full bar w/ Drink Specials. In house restaurant & backyard BBQ.

Stage #1
6:00 Human Eye
5:00 Tyvek
4:00 Thee Oh Sees
3:00 Golden Triangle
2:00 Lovvers
1:00 The Beets

Stage #2
6:00 Cheeseburger
5:00 Jim Jones Revue
4:00 Slim Cessna’s Auto Club
3:00 Kid Congo Powers
2:00 Carletta Sue Kay
1:00 Or, The Whale
12:00 La Strada

4:30 Everybody Was In the French Resistance Now (w/ Eddie Argos of Art Brut)
3:30 A Sunny Day in Glasgow
2:30 Odawas

12:30 The Sandwitches

I think BrooklynVegan is kinda becoming the blog version of The Vivian Girls. I’ll always remember that band for the hard work they put in a couple years back playing something like 15 shows over 4 days. BV seems to be putting on close to that many shows this year.

DC Does Texas SXSW (Sorta) Party

Unless I’m reading this wrong, it looks like the annual DC Does Texas SXSW show, which usually goes down on the Wednesday of SXSW, isn’t happening this year. Well, let me amend that… it’s not happening in Austin this year (or on a Wednesday).

Rather, there’s going to be a DC Does Texas “SXSW send-off” party in Alexandria, VA this Friday night. The show will take place at the Austin Grill in Old Town (801 King St.), and will feature:

9:30pm: Typefighter
10:15pm: The Beanstalk Library
11:00pm: Deleted Scenes
11:45pm: Middle Distance Runner

Honestly, this is a damn legit lineup for a show at, err, the Austin Grill. The show costs just $5 and it’s all ages, so jump on the Metro and head down to Old Town this Friday night.

Oh, and if you’re not in the mood for Mexican food, get down there a little early and check out Eamonn’s Dublin Chipper. Some of the best Dublin-style fish and chips that I’ve ever had outside of, well, Dublin.

Edited to add: I should be clear and say that I have no real confirmation that the DC Does Texas show isn’t also happening in Austin this year. I just haven’t heard anything, and the people I know who would probably know about these things haven’t heard any news. Let’s hope I’m wrong, though!

VIDEO: The Rest, “Apples & Allergies”

New video from one of my favorite records of the last year or so.

If you haven’t checked out The Rest yet, or even if you have, take a couple minutes and watch this video. The song is fantastic, and the video uses animations from the Van Beuren Studio, a short-lived RKO-affiliated outfit that specialized in silent film cartoons.

Watch a Full Live Set from forgetters

Not sure how I still haven’t manage to see forgetters, the new band featuring Blake Schwarzenbach (of Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil) along with Caroline Paquita and Kevin Mahon. I missed them in Austin during Fun Fun Fun Fest last November, and they still haven’t ventured out to Chicago yet.

Thankfully, though, I just discovered that there’s a great video of the band’s compelte set from Gainesville, FL a few months back. Check it out:
