The Dismemberment Plan @ Metro Gallery [8/10/12]

Last night was the first night of two small, low key shows on the East Coast by the reunited The Dismemberment Plan. If you’ll recall, the band first reunited in early 2011, and played a series of shows that spring and summer before finishing up at last year’s Pitchfork Fest. After that last show, the band kinda disappeared again, without announcing whether the reunion would continue or not.

Then, about a month ago, the band announced two low-key shows in Baltimore and Fredericksburg, VA. Full disclosure — I’m on the board of Fredericksburg All Ages, the all ages venue they’re playing in Fredericksburg, along with Eric Axelson from the band — so I’ve known for a while that they were considering doing some additional shows. My understanding, however, was that they were just doing shows “for fun.”

Well, last night seems (to me, at least) to have proven that these weren’t just “fun” one-offs. The band was sporting almost entirely new gear, and, most importantly, played seven new songs.

I’ll need to hear the songs again tonight to have a better opinion, but I liked everything they played. One thing that definitely stood out is that Travis’ vocal delivery on these songs are much, much more similar to his vocals on his more recent solo output than with early D Plan material. His singing is, by and large, pretty straight-forward without the various tics and woops and hollers of earlier D Plan songs. The songs too seem to be a little more straightforward, but — vitally — with some absolutely amazing musicianship underlying it, including some absolutely killer bass and drum lines from Eric and Joe, and some great guitar freakouts from Jason. This is definitely a more mature D Plan, but it’s still the D Plan.

I didn’t get many song titles (I’ll try to get them tonight), but in the order they were played, my order of preference was: 6, 7, 5, 1, 3, 2, 4. I think. Now I just need to get a setlist to figure out what’s what.

Anyway, those are just some quick thoughts. Check out some pics below. Hopefully I’ll get some better ones tonight.

Some of my favorite recent concert pics, taken with my new camera. Nothing professional, but so much better than my old camera.

Jeff Tweedy @ Hotel SnS [4/23/11]

(Updated with full setlist at bottom)

I’ve fallen waaaaay behind on posting photos (and thoughts) from shows in recent months. I think – though I emphasize think – that I’ve decided to refocus some attention on this blog a bit, and I figured the best way to kick things off is to post some photos from last night’s Jeff Tweedy living room show at the Hotel SnS.

If you’re not familiar with Jeff’s living room shows, for most of the past decade Jeff has been involved with Letters to Santa, a charity organized by Steve Albini and his wife Heather Whinna.  The group organizes an annual 24-hour event at Second City here in Chicago with non-stop improvisational comedy as well as musical performances. That event traditionally includes a performance by Jeff Tweedy, and, at the end, Jeff auctions off several personal living room performances, with all proceeds going to Letters to Santa. You can see some of my photos from the past couple Letters to Santa shows here, here and here.

This year I was lucky enough to know a couple of the winning bidders for a Tweedy show, and I managed to finagle myself an invitation to the show.  For that I owe a HUGE thank you to the winning bidders/organizers, @samorama, @paulsuwan and Suz (who isn’t on Twitter but gets a thank you anyway!), and everyone else in the group for helping to make this happen.

Anyway, the show was about as spectacular as you’d expect. Everyone in the crowd got to pick a song, from traditional favorites (“Jesus, etc.”) to covers (“Ripple”) to rarities (“Corduroy Cutoff Girl” and “This Ain’t No Lounge Ax”). My pick was “Please Tell My Brother” from this album, after which Jeff jokingly thanked me for picking a depressing song and bumming everybody out. Good times.

I’d post a setlist if I had one, but I forgot a pen and was too busy listening and watching (and taking some pictures) to write down song names. Jeff did play two brand new songs, one of which should be on the new album (which is apparently about 75% recorded) and one which will likely end up as a B-side or other release. Both were excellent, though I honestly think I liked the B-side more. Which is exactly what Jeff thought we’d all think. Meh.

Onto the pics.
