This Week In Chicago – Tomorrow Never Knows Fest

No full listing this week (I do plan on starting them up again eventually, just not yet), but I wanted to make sure to show some love for the excellent Tomorrow Never Knows festival happening this week at Schubas, Lincoln Hall and Metro.

The festival has expanded to five days and three venues this year, and showcases a bunch of really fantastic established and up-and-coming artists.  Think of it almost like a (much) smaller, more carefully curated version of CMJ.  These are all artists you’re going to be hearing more about in the future, and I highly recommend getting out this week and catching them in small venues while you can.

Tickets for most of the shows are still available, as are 5-day passes.

Here’s the full schedule with my recommendations in bold.

Wednesday, 1/12
Lincoln Hall: The Helio Sequence, Sun Airway, Houses, California Wives
Schubas: Magic Kids, Generationals, Pet Lions, In Tall Buildings

Thursday, 1/13
Lincoln Hall: The Besnard Lakes, Frankie Rose & The Outs, Lia Ices, A Lull
Schubas: Marketa Irglova, Sam Amidon, Jeremy Messersmith, Bone & Bell [SOLD OUT]

Friday, 1/14
Lincoln Hall: Mister Heavenly, Screaming Females, Title Tracks, The Dig
Metro: Freddie Gibbs, Shad, Rita J, DJ RTC
Schubas: Twin Shadow, Fol Chen, BRAHMS, Apache Beat [SOLD OUT]

Saturday, 1/15
Lincoln Hall: Handsome Furs, Jaill, Oberhofer, Cloud Nothings
Metro: Tanlines, Reptar, Young Empires, Yawn Kid Color
Schubas (3pm): Boogers
Schubas (9pm): The Concretes, Seapony, Kopecky Family Band, The Red River

Sunday, 1/16
Lincoln Hall: Little Dragon, Alex Winston, Billygoat, Mister Joshua
Schubas (3pm): Human-Tim + Robot-Tim
Schubas (9pm): S. Carey, Darwin Deez, Young Man, Lionlimb

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I also didn’t mention that Robbie Fulks‘ Monday night residency at The Hideout is happening this week too, featuring “Dapper and Deffer” with Beau Sample.  I recommend seeing Robbie any time and in any capacity that you can.

This Week In Chicago [Nov. 29-Dec. 5]

Holy shit — it’s a This Week In Chicago post! What’s it been, a month? Sorry kids…

Anyway, we’re back, and just in time for a very mediocre week of music. Well, mediocre in terms of overall number of options, not quality of options. Because, of course, SUPERCHUNK is in town. And so is Chris Mills. And Robbie Fulks is about to close out a full year of Hideout residency shows, and locals The 1900s and Tyler Jon Tyler are at the Empty Bottle on Friday. So there are definitely good shows going on, but mid-week is pretty freakin’ dead, and for that reason I use the term mediocre.

Shows in bold are recommended shows, while shows in larger bold red are shows that I plan on going to and/or shows that I really, really think you should be going to. Sorry, no embedded videos or songs this week.

Theoretically I’ll be Detroit on Saturday to see Guided By Voices again, but that’s looking slightly less likely than it did a few days ago. If I stay in town, I’ll likely be at the Empty Bottle.

This Week In Chicago [October 18-24]

Solid week of music this week, if a little more sedate than the last couple of weeks.  That’s a good thing, mind you – I’m still trying to recover from the 1-2-3 punch of Forgetters/Guided by Voices/Greg Dulli last week.

Right now it looks like I’ll be the Empty Bottle on Tuesday for Henry Clay People/The Dig and Schubas on Wednesday for Avi Buffalo/New Ruins.  There are several interesting options on Thursday and Friday too, but I’m gonna wait until later in the week to decide what, if anything, to see.  I’m tempted to check out the Friday night show at Lucky Gator, as I’ve never been there, and I kinda dig the late-90’s emo sounds of LIPREADER.

This Week In Chicago

Another legitimately excellent week of music in Chicago this week, and several incredible shows this weekend (Built to Spill, Jay Bennett Foundation benefit, The National). Of course, that’s the weekend that my parents decide to make their first visit since I moved to Chicago. Ugh.

Shows in bold are recommended shows, while shows in larger bold red are shows that I plan on going to and/or shows that I really, really think you should be going to. Sorry, no embedded videos or songs this week.

This Week In Chicago [Sept. 13-19]

What turned out to be an extremely weak August (and early September) concert calendar has finally turned a corner. As I write this, we’re about to enter into a stretch of two months with some absolutely incredible shows. In fact, it very well may be the most exciting two months of live music I’ve ever had in my life — Guided By Voices, Pavement, Teenage Funclub (twice!), The Frames, The Vaselines, Greg Dulli, five days of Riot Fest, Sufjan Stevens, Belle and Sebastian, Forgetters and on and on.

I’m serious when I say this — there aren’t going to be many better times to be a music fan, in Chicago or elsewhere. So do yourself a favor and try to get out to some upcoming shows. You’ll be glad you did.

Here are this week’s shows. Shows in bold are recommended shows, while shows in larger bold red are shows that I plan on going to and/or shows that I really, really think you should be going to. This Week In Chicago [Sept. 6-12]

Solid week of music coming up here in Chicago. The only two shows I’m definitely going to are Tommy Keene at Schubas on Thursday and Hey Rosetta! at Lincoln Hall on Friday, but there’s plenty of other interesting stuff that might convince me to venture out on other nights.

One show I will not be seeing, however, is that Slash set with Myles Kennedy on vocals (opening for Billy Idol). Based on the video I’ve seen, I’d much prefer to see Axl Rose show up an hour late with a team of fake Slashes than Slash show up on time with this dude.

Shows in bold are recommended shows, while shows in larger bold red are shows that I plan on going to and/or shows that I really, really think you should be going to. Oh, and be sure to check out the embedded videos/audio below to get a taste of some of the bands playing this week (including Slash and not-Axl performing “Paradise City”).

This Week In Chicago [August 23-29]

Very solid week of music in town this week. Several big conflicts, which typically would annoy me, but given how slow things have been for the last month or so, I can handle it.
